Gambling harm can be described as the negative consequences and adverse effects that can arise from engaging in gambling activities, particularly for individuals experiencing gambling addiction.

While for most people gambling is an enjoyable pastime, for some gambling can lead to severe harm.

This is a compulsive behaviour characterised by an individual’s inability to control their gambling activities despite the negative consequences it may have on their life – with their loss of money, time and cognition. Recognising and addressing gambling harm is crucial to ensure the well-being and safety of all.

Psychological

Problem gambling can lead to severe psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and a constant preoccupation with gambling activities. Individuals may experience feelings of guilt, shame, and a loss of control, which can significantly impact their overall mental health and well-being.

Physical

The physical toll of problem gambling can manifest in various ways. The stress and anxiety associated with excessive gambling can lead to sleep disturbances, weight changes, and a compromised immune system. Additionally, individuals may neglect self-care routines, such as exercise and healthy eating, further deteriorating their physical health.

Financial

One of the most significant consequences of problem gambling is its devastating impact on an individual’s financial situation. Compulsive gambling often leads to mounting debts, bankruptcy and a loss of savings, assets, or even one’s livelihood. This financial strain can create a cycle of desperation and further fuel the gambling problem.

Social

Problem gambling can severely strain relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Individuals may become increasingly isolated as their focus and time revolve around gambling activities rather than maintaining meaningful social connections. Trust can be eroded, and conflicts may arise, leading to a breakdown in important support systems.

Repetitional

Problem gambling can have a detrimental effect on an individual’s reputation and could also lead to damaging the team, organisation or even industries reputation. Engaging in problematic gambling behaviours can lead to a loss of credibility and trust, impacting professional relationships and opportunities. A tarnished reputation can be challenging to rebuild and may have long-lasting consequences within the industry.
