Spotting The Signs

It’s important to know what signs to look out for in your teammates.

When it comes to recognising signs in your teammates, understanding changes in behaviour, performance, or demeanour can be key indicators.

In the video, Marc and Chris discuss the signs and the types of behaviours you may spot in others.

As Chris discussed, it is important to be able to spot signs in yourself and others that could potentially be indications of suffering from problems with gambling.

This following list is by no means exhaustive and can also apply to other issues, but knowledge of how gambling harm could present itself is valuable to know.

Think about someone you know who you suspect may be struggling and consider the factors that apply:

  • Skip training sessions, work or matches/competitions/races etc.
  • Argue with teammates or colleagues
  • Poor or odd performances at work
  • Borrowing or asking for money at work
  • Bragging about winning bets
  • Constantly on mobile phone
  • Over emotional response to races or other sporting events
  • Outbursts of anger
  • Increased lying

How many of the signs are relevant? Is it time for a conversation?

Approaching someone on any of these issues can be a daunting task, almost more so if it is someone you are close to.

Finger pointing and accusations to someone who is potentially vulnerable can have the opposite effect of what you want to achieve. Approaching with a supportive nature, empathy and understanding is key.

At the end of this module we will provide you with details for where to get support and advice on this.
